Sustainability at Sedus: circular economy as the key to conserving resources

Sustainability at Sedus: circular economy as the key to conserving resources

The Sedus Green Codex: guidelines for sustainable behaviour

With the Green Codex, Sedus has developed a comprehensive guideline that ensures transparency and sustainability in all areas of the company. Every step in the process is part of a well thought-out circular model that aims to minimise resources, waste, emissions and energy. Through continuous process optimisation and strict quality controls, the service life of products is extended time and time again.

A practical example: Resource-saving processing of chipboard

A concrete example of the implementation of the circular economy at Sedus is the handling of chipboards. These are purchased from two suppliers and processed at the Sedus production site in Geseke. The post-consumer content of these chipboards is already 34.5% and 50% respectively. However, the offcuts produced during processing are also not left unutilised:

Some of the offcuts are used in the form of wood chips to heat all Sedus production and administration buildings. Large-format residual boards are sold to an Eastern European customer who uses them as construction timber for seating furniture. The remaining proportion of panel remnants and chips is collected by a waste disposal company and sold back to the chipboard manufacturers. In this way, all of the waste flows back into the production process, closing the material cycle and making an active contribution to conserving resources and avoiding waste.

Environmentally friendly heating concept since the 1970s

The use of waste wood chips to generate heat and to heat the Sedus production and administration buildings, is a sustainable and environmentally friendly heating concept that has been supplying the necessary heat energy from our own CO₂-neutral waste materials since the 1970s. In compliance with all legal emissions regulations, this means that the use of gas and oil fuels to generate heat energy can be completely dispensed with.

The 'R' strategy: repair, refurbish, reuse, recycle

Part of the Sedus Green Codex is also the so-called ‘R’ strategy, which consists of the points Repair, Refurbish, Reuse and Recycling. This strategy aims to extend the service life of products and minimise their environmental impact. For example, Sedus offers a subsequent delivery guarantee on spare parts so that customers can repair their furniture themselves. In addition, office furniture from photo shoots and trade fairs is resold at reduced prices in the Sedus Outlet after technical inspection, which saves resources and pleases customers.

Sustainable supply chain as a model for the future

When it comes to procurement, Sedus emphasises short transport routes and certified materials. Over 85% of suppliers come from Europe and more than 66% from Germany. Materials, such as secondary aluminium, wood from sustainable forestry and recycled plastics, are preferred. In addition, 100% green electricity is used in production.

With these measures, Sedus not only minimises waste, but also makes optimum use of resources. By working closely with partners and implementing the Green Codex, the company ensures that materials are used and reused efficiently. This is not only ecologically sensible, but also economically advantageous. A sustainable supply chain is an important part of securing the future - for the company, its customers and the environment.

Sedus remains true to this principle and is constantly developing new ways to further advance the circular economy in furniture production.
