se:flair – A new benchmark for ergonomic design in the modern working world

A chair for the modern working world

The se:flair is not just a simple office chair, but a versatile companion that adapts to a wide variety of working environments. Judith Daur, who works as an in-house designer at Sedus, played a key role in the development of this product.

As part of several Smart Thinking projects, we asked people how they work from home and what they want. The results of these surveys flowed directly into the design of se:flair. Daur explains further: ‘One of the groups didn’t have their own own study area and therefore choose to work in the living/dining area. They don’t necessarily want to place a classic task chair in this area.’ This knowledge gave rise to the idea of the chair.

A central element of se:flair is its ergonomic adaptability, which is ensured by the high-quality knitted membrane in the backrest area. This adapts perfectly to the body, supports individual movements and enables a variety of sitting positions. The “Kinetic Swing” mechanism and integrated lumbar support ensure maximum comfort. It is particularly worth emphasising that the knitted membrane is not only ergonomic, but also has a homely feel – an aspect that played an important role in the design. ‘The most comfortable backrest is the one that automatically adapts to every back. In the world of office furniture, this is a mesh backrest.’

Aesthetics and functionality in harmony

The se:flair not only impresses with its ergonomic properties, but also with its sophisticated design. The armrests are cleverly integrated into the backrest frame under the knitted membrane, giving the chair a cosy and stylish look. Fans of monochrome designs have the option of choosing the seat cushion in the same material as the backrest, while two-colour combinations allow for customisation.

The designer reflects on the challenges and solutions that were overcome during the development of the chair: ‘What does a shell skeleton have to look like for a membrane to stretch over the shell in the way it does with se:flair?’ We can see the answer here:

With se:flair, Sedus has created a piece of furniture that combines comfort, style and functionality. It is a chair that adapts to the modern needs of the working world and at the same time represents an aesthetic enrichment for any home or office. Judith Daur and the design team have invented a new dimension in seating with this design object – one that is both ergonomic and cosy.
