More than a standard – ergonomics for everyone
People are just as diverse in their appearance as they are in their preferences and talents. The world of work is also subject to constant change, with the result that a wide variety of working styles are now in use. The classic swivel chair is a work partner that accompanies us for many hours of the day. But how can an office chair fit as many different body shapes and proportions as possible?
The answer lies in the design and the details. An office chair will impress with its ergonomic functions if it can be customised with appropriate dimensions and adjustment ranges. Products that allow this diversity in adjustment offer enormous advantages:
- Ergonomic: Products that support the ergonomic posture of different users are essential for healthy working.
- Technical: Products that are technically up to date are able to cope with their tasks and can be used without hesitation in accordance with defined specifications.
- Qualitative: Specifications ensure that the product and the tested standard are officially approved, safe and trustworthy.
Various standards must be fulfilled for an office chair to receive a GS certificate. One of these is DIN EN:1335-1:2023, which focuses on the dimensional requirements for an ergonomic office swivel chair in the working environment. This standard specifies adjustment ranges and ensures a standardised measurement procedure.
The international standard ISO 24496 was developed to standardise the different measurement methods for office swivel chairs worldwide. At the same time, DIN EN:1335-1 was also revised in order to define higher ergonomic requirements for office swivel chairs and to implement ISO 25596. The aim was also to adapt the ergonomic requirements to changing body dimensions in Europe.
DIN EN:1335-1:2023 categorises office chairs into types A, B and C, which provide information on the ergonomics of the respective chair. Types A and B fulfil the requirements of the VDU workstation directive. In the course of the revision, the requirements for the fulfilment of the respective type were also significantly increased.
Four Sedus products are Type A compliant
If an office chair conforms to Type A, the advantages are obvious: the adjustment ranges allow a Type A office chair to fit many people of different stature and can be individually adjusted to the user. This also has a sustainable aspect, as a product that enables diversity does not have to be replaced after a short time. Sedus has four office chair families whose configurations fulfil the Type A standard with specific codes:
- black dot (normal, net & air) – the Sedus office chair classic
- se:flex – the office swivel chair for interchangeable workstations
- mr.24 – the 24-hour chair for long working hours
- se:kit – the office chair in a modular system
Sedus is setting new standards with the conformity of its product families and can further consolidate its position as a leading European manufacturer. The contemporary concepts and fulfilment of the current standard are proof of ergonomics, technology, quality and innovation at Sedus.
SA8000 certification – proof of social responsibility
A customisable ergonomic office chair is only really enjoyable when it is guaranteed that it is produced under fair conditions. Sedus is proud to have SA8000 certification, which ensures responsible corporate management in its processes. Sedus is currently one of only a few companies in Germany to hold this demanding certification.
Fulfilment of nine criteria
SA8000 is a standard that defines the requirements for a certifiable management system for social responsibility and ensuring appropriate working conditions in companies and along their supply chain.
This standard places particular emphasis on aspects that ensure that companies act in an ethical and socially responsible manner. To this end, all nine criteria must be taken into account and complied with both within the company and throughout the entire supply chain. These include: no child or forced labour, minimum health and safety standards, freedom of association & right to collective bargaining, no discrimination or physical or psychological punishment, compliance with working time laws and a living wage.
By implementing the SA8000 standard, Sedus shows that economic efficiency and sustainability can go hand in hand. Sedus – always at the cutting edge, a pioneer in the market and a company that actively fulfils individual needs and social responsibility.
