Who doesn’t need somewhere in the office for quiet reflection or a casual conversation with a colleague? The new se:café bench from Sedus provides the perfect answer. The fully upholstered bench combines a domestic aesthetic with a comfortable design, offering a wide range of height and model options that make it ideal for both informal meetings and somewhere to take a break.
Designer Konstantin Thomas focused on creating a design that subtly yet effectively integrates ergonomics with comfort. “For me, ergonomics is always a question of striking a balance between functional customisation and visual clarity,” explains Thomas. “The bench should convey a sense of openness and lightness without sacrificing the essential aspects of seating comfort. The proportions of the seat and backrest are designed to reflect natural postures, while the clean lines and ergonomic curve of the backrest provide intuitive support. It's about subtle design features that maximise comfort and for users to feel comfortable without consciously thinking about the ergonomics.”
The se:café bench is a core element of the new Work Café concept from Sedus, because it is so adaptable. It offers more than just a place to sit - it encourages interaction while supporting flexibility and openness. With its clean geometric lines and intuitive form, the bench creates structure in the office while fostering engagement.
The se:café bench facilitates spontaneous encounters, informal meetings and moments of retreat. Its modular design allows people to adapt the bench for different uses - whether for short coffee breaks or longer team meetings. The design blends seamlessly into its surroundings without dominating them, making it ideal for modern, dynamic workplaces where communication, openness and flexibility are key.
The choice of materials was an important starting point for its design and development. “For the upholstered se:café bench, it was about finding the right balance between comfort, durability and function,” explains Thomas. “For the cushions, we used high-quality foams that maintain their shape over time, ensuring complete comfort. This is not about excess, but about efficiency and practicality. The upholstery is just as important. We use hard-wearing fabrics or leather that are both tactile and aesthetically pleasing. They should convey an aesthetic lightness of touch while at the same time being robust enough to withstand daily use.”
The design deliberately dispenses with armrests in order to offer users greater freedom of movement and seating space. The bench is available in three different options: as a se:café bench without backrest, as a se:café high bench with backrest and foot rail and as a se:café high diner consisting of two se:café high benches facing each other with a foot rail, connecting privacy screen and integrated table with power and data connections.
