How does the Carbon Footprint Calculator work?

What is the carbon footprint?

The carbon footprint, or CO₂ footprint, refers to total greenhouse gas emissions. This can be caused by a material, a product, a project or an organisation, expressed as CO₂ equivalents. One CO2 equivalent corresponds to one tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted.

There are two different ways for companies to calculate their carbon footprint: the corporate carbon footprint (CCF) as a company-related approach and the product carbon footprint (PCF) as a product-related approach.

In 2022, the CCF at Sedus totalled 27,591 t CO₂. By disclosing the CCF, Sedus has created transparency for customers, partners and employees.

Sedus calculates its CCF in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol in three scopes: direct emissions, indirect emissions from purchased energy, and indirect emissions within the value chain.

Another tool that creates transparency is the Environmental Product Information (EPI). The EPI is available to download for more than 100 Sedus products. Among other things, it contains the product carbon footprint of products.

How to use the Carbon Footprint Calculator

If a customer wants to know the carbon footprint of an entire project, Sedus offers to calculate it using the Carbon Footprint Calculator.

The calculation process of the Carbon Footprint Calculator is based on the DIN EN 15804 life cycle assessment and is carried out in an Excel spreadsheet. The calculation includes all Sedus products as well as the logistics for delivery and therefore provides a comprehensive and individual insight into the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

First, the data has to be entered into the corresponding Excel spreadsheet. This includes the products used and their quantity, the distance between the delivery location and the production sites, and the number of people who will benefit from the project or use the products.

Once the data has been entered, the evaluation can begin. A report can be created that summarises the results in a clear and concise way. It is also possible to visualise project carbon footprint dashboards.

The advantages of these calculations are clear: the data is available at the push of a button, and different Sedus products can be quickly compared in terms of their carbon footprint.
