When organic design meets craftsmanship: the new se:café wooden chair and the new se:café lounge chair are sure to catch the eye with their timeless aesthetic. When it comes to the design of solid wood chairs, Sedus has a long history of being the best there is. This tradition is characterised by its combination of craftsmanship and innovation, as explained by designer Konstantin Thomas.
“The fusion of wood craftsmanship and modern design reflect the way we have balanced heritage with contemporary needs”, he says. “By making the conscious decision to incorporate functional elegance and clean lines, the chair reflects its roots in the Sedus tradition and its role in the modern world.”
By reinterpreting coffee house seating in this way, it was essential to focus on the chair’s function and intuitive design. “I wanted to create a chair that is both aesthetically pleasing and practical,” explains Thomas. “This means that the shape directly reflects the purpose of the chair while also offering a minimalist but well-thought-out design.”
One of the biggest challenges in designing the chair was striking the right balance between its complex shape and the properties of wood as a material. “Wood is a living thing, it reacts to temperature and humidity,” explains Thomas. “This means it needs to be manufactured in a precise way so it doesn’t lose its shape. The solution is to combine traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies to maintain the structural integrity and aesthetic of the chair.”
The selection of materials was based on their authenticity and durability. “I opted for solid beech and ash wood because they have a wonderful feel and can develop a beautiful patina over time,” says Thomas. “The manufacturing process is precise and combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. The joints are exposed and therefore show the construction of the chair - there is no attempt to hide anything. The design is honest and direct, just like the materials from which it is made.”
As you would expect from Sedus, sustainability is a key element of the design. The wooden chairs are made from FSC- certified wood to minimise the ecological footprint and optimise the use of resources. “By carefully selecting durable materials and reducing the design to the essentials, I have ensured that the chair is not only aesthetically pleasing and functional, but also has a long practical life,” says Thomas. “The design itself is consciously timeless to ensure the chair remains relevant not only in the present, but also into the future.”
The se:café wooden chair & lounge chair are available in two seat heights - table height and lounge height. The beech version is available in a choice of five finishes: natural, black, ruby red, deep green and midnight blue. The ash version is available in one of three colours: natural, black or stained to natural oak. The seat is available in wicker or wood.
The se:café wooden chair & lounge chair will be showcased publicly for the first time at Orgatec. The Sedus stand is in Hall 6.1, A010 C019. We look forward to seeing you there.
