This point is very important due to the consequences it has on an employee’s pro- ductivity, focus, attention and capability to collaborate.
Absenteeism is just one of the aspects of a poor lifestyle at work: another, very impor- tant one is “presenteeism”, i.e. the condition in which employees are at work but not fully productive due to personal health issues.
“NOWADAYS PEOPLE SIT 9.3 HOURS A DAY, WHICH IS MORE THAN THEY SLEEP. SITTING IS SO INCREDIBLY PREVALENT THAT WE DON’T EVEN QUESTION HOW MUCH WE DO IT”
NILOFER MERCHANT, “GOT A MEETING? TAKE A WALK”, TED TALK, 2013.
Presenteeism is strongly related to the personal level of commitment, i.e. a “positive, enthusiastic and effective connection with work that motivates an employee to invest in getting the job done with excellence because the work energizes the person.” as the Sloan Center on Aging & Work has described it.
Research shows that committed employees are 26% more productive, 20% less absent from the workplace and more likely to withstand temptations to leave a company, with visible advantages in the cost of the employees’ turn-over and the ca- pability to attract the most talented workers.
